Typecasting Indian Women - Reality Check

While we pat ourselves on the back for celebrating women's day, little do we realize that by isolating and specifically talking about women's virtues is one of the chief reasons for women's continued apathy in this country. Our society can be considered evolved and gender neutral ONLY if women are able do what they please in the society WITHOUT the probing and judgmental views of the men folk ( and sections of women folk as well ). An evolved society will not have different set of social expectations for men and women.

The root cause of such disparity and skewed expectations on women stems right from childhood where women are expected to behave in specific manner - childish, coy, submissive, quiet, passive etc. Whereas men can get away with any outrageous acts in the society that are perhaps not illegal, but just short of that.

Why is this disparity? Why would the society look at any young women as a matter of curiosity and set preconceived expectations of them? Why would the society believe that women are one of God mothers, glamour dolls, selfless homemaker, scheming evils etc etc. Why would the society can't handle an assertive woman in level terms?

The root cause lies in education system. In India, for long, we have separate schools for boys and girls and the problem starts right there. Both sexes deveop unrealistic and inaccurate picture about the other which is very hard to change later in life.

I will have to state in this occasion that Coeducation must be made compulsory in India. For long generations have evolved with misplaced notions about the other sex resulting in hyped up imaginations and skewed stereotyping. Women are worst hit in this regard. It is mandatory that boys consider girls as equals and vice versa. The tendency to typecast girls into rigid categories - God mother, glamour doll or passive servant - must go away immediately if women have semblance of chance to walk on equal terms in the society. Co education will go a long way in bringing up this mental shift amongst boys and men at large.

So folks, think constructively. Women don't want special status or concessions. They want freedom from society that stereo types and casts them into neat roles much against the women's inherent nature. They want to operate in an equal and free society where they can compete on level terms with others without sacrificing their femininity or inherent personality.

So stop the farcial women's day celebration and the glorification that are at best phony and false. Take heart and treat women like how you treat another man in the same situation. Stop stereotyping and start behaving in a mature way. Women are no different than men socially. Men will have to grow up to take this notion in stride.

Thanks
